One Space Between Sentences(Link Post)

August 24, 2012

Some topics in this book will involve discretionary choices. Not this one. Always put exactly one space between sentences. Or more generally: put exactly one space after any punctuation…

Stargate Movie Sequel(Link Post)

July 12, 2012

Now that Stargate is no longer on television and MGM (the studio that owns the rights to the franchise) is under new management — a management that so far has been focusing more on recovering the film side of the historic studio’s business — it seems like more than wishful thinking…
“If you look at our budget and say, ‘OK, we’re doing fine with our numbers and …,’ you’re making money, but you’re not necessarily making as much as if you were to say, ‘OK, instead of making a full season or even six episodes of ‘Eureka,’ we could go and make six new reality shows and order a couple more pilots of potential new shows,’” Paglia recently told Assignment X…
As you can see in the video below, when the time came for the Q&A session with Ari, I got up and asked a question that he didn’t seem to like very much (my question starts at about 16:53, but you should watch the whole thing). The gist of my question was simple: does he think that in order to fight piracy, it’s AT&T, Verizon, and Google’s responsibility to create a roadblock to that content…

The music industry wants LimeWire to pay up to $75 trillion in damages after losing a copyright infringement claim. That’s right … $75 trillion. Manhattan federal Judge Kimba Wood has labeled this request “absurd.”…
I did not receive a lot of interaction in the comments on my article at Mac Appstorm, but I did receive one that I want to interact with…

Fox is shaping up its 2012-2013 TV season slate, and we now know, we’ll get a Season 2 of “Touch” and saying goodbye to “Alcatraz” and “The Finder,” which have both been canceled…
There needs to be a way to make Version 1 no longer for sale, but still available for customers who already bought it. They should be able to re-download the version they bought at any time. Developers should still be able to release updates to that version…
A 23-year old student from Sheffield Hallam University in the north of England is bound for America. That wouldn’t be unusual—except that Richard O’Dwyer won’t go voluntarily. The UK Home Secretary has today agreed to extradite O’Dwyer over US copyright infringement charges for running a “linking site” called TVShack…

CBS CEO Fears Disruption(Link Post)

March 22, 2012

CBS CEO Leslie Moonves said Saturday that he was approached about a year ago by Steve Jobs to provide content for Apple’s long-rumored television service but he declined to participate. Moonves told a conference audience that he met with Jobs, the late Apple CEO, and heard a pitch for what was billed as a subscription content service, but ultimately he said he wasn’t interested in providing CBS shows or films to the venture…
When Wikipedia and Google purport to be neutral sources of information, but then exploit their stature to present information that is not only not neutral but affirmatively incomplete and misleading, they are duping their users into accepting as truth what are merely self-serving political declarations…

A license to link?(Link Post)

February 6, 2012

The website desiring this “license to link” is supposed to fill in this form and then fax—faxing is the only option—it in to Lowe’s and wait for permission. Assuming that permission is granted, the new licensee has the right to create his link, with certain caveats…
But today, I can’t leave a movie theatre without paying $50. My wife and I both need to get in, and now tickets are over $10. Popcorn prices have been going up for years as has drinks, so now I’m paying even more for the same thing. I get into the theatre, and it’s the same experience I had 20 years ago — which would be fine, but my 1080P TV at home sure does look a lot better, and I don’t have to deal with Smokey McTextingpants in the next row live tweeting the event from his BlackBerry. Plus I’ve got to get a babysitter (and I understand that it’s not your fault that I decided to procreate), deal with that whole nonsense and in the end, it’s just not worth the cash. Too much friction…
Let me get this straight, the guy left his brand new expensive computer in his car, which was broken into, and he blames Apple? Can you say entitlement…

Redesigning Mac App Updates(Link Post)

January 12, 2012

There are basically two different approaches Mac apps use when it comes to updating. The apps available on the Mac App Store are updated through the Store only – which obviously means that you aren’t really notified of new updates unless you open the App Store. Then, there are apps that aren’t yet available on the App Store for various reasons…
AllThingsD reports that Netflix (and Blockbuster) will be required to wait twice as long, or a full 56 days after DVDs hit retail shelves, before offering Warner Brothers content under a new distribution agreement…
I don’t use this app, I don’t even know what it is. But this sort of thing is just irritating. I don’t have a lot of issues with things Apple does, but this would be one of them…
I have been fairly pleased with the setup until Lion. My computer is almost always on my home network overnight, and via TimeMachineScheduler (an app which let’s you change Time Machine’s backup schedule), my computer backs up to my Apple Time Capsule overnight while I’m asleep. It’s a nice system, effortless. I did the initial setup and now I don’t think about it anymore…
